'He is a physician, graduated from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1979). He holds a specialist title in internal medicine (1981) and neurology (1983) from the same institution, as well as in adult and pediatric neurology (1985) from the Jackson Memorial Hospital at the University of Miami, USA (1984–1985).

He obtained a Master’s degree (1988) and a PhD (1991) in Neurology from the Federal University of São Paulo, and completed postdoctoral training (1991–1993) at Lund University, Sweden, where he produced four new publications (in addition to the original article derived from his doctoral thesis) on the therapeutic effect of induced moderate hypothermia in experimental animals hours after cerebral ischemia.

In the following years, post-ischemic moderate hypothermia (33 °C) consolidated as a standard treatment for neonatal asphyxia in the NICUs (Neonatal Intensive Care Units) of major international centers, including Brazil. It is also used in the treatment of patients who have suffered transient cardiac arrest, with the aim of preventing irreversible brain injury.

He is currently a "Professor Livre Docente" (Senior Lecturer/Habilitated Professor) in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Federal University of São Paulo, in the Neuroscience Discipline. He is the founding president of the Institute for Research and Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases.

He works in the area of Medicine (Neurology and Clinical Medicine), with an emphasis on neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. He developed a treatment based on the use of high doses of vitamin D, aimed at compensating for the genetic resistance -discovered from the results of the "Human Genome Project" - to the immunomodulatory effects of this secosteroid in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

This treatment has been named the "Coimbra Protocol", a name that emerged spontaneously on various social networks managed by patients and/or relatives of patients from different countries, who disseminate its benefits in 13 different languages.
The protocol is used by over a hundred Brazilian and foreign doctors who have been trained by the author or (in the case of Germany) by doctors directly trained by him, in order to guarantee the correct execution of the treatment and avoid vitamin D intoxication.

The author has participated as a speaker, both nationally and internationally, in various symposia and congresses on the importance of this secosteroid for the immune system, as well as on the pathophysiology of the reversibility of traumatic and ischemic brain injury...'
